Before we dive in, let's familiarize ourselves with a few key terms you'll encounter throughout this book.

  • Overseer: The person who prepares the mystery, portrays the world, controls non-player characters, and presents the dangers the Hunters must survive. The Overseer is not the Hunters' enemy; they are the keeper of consequences, clues, pressure, and tone.

  • Hunter: The player characters in Obscured. Hunters are the protagonists, individuals who defend humanity against supernatural threats. Each Hunter has unique abilities, skills, and motivations that shape their role in the group and their approach to challenges.

  • Horror: The primary antagonists in Obscured. Horrors are supernatural entities that threaten humanity, ranging from ancient gods and inter-dimensional beings to cursed artifacts and possessed humans. Each Horror has unique abilities, weaknesses, and agendas, serving as the main obstacles for Hunters to confront and overcome.

  • Edge: A temporary favorable position. When a rule says you roll with edge, roll the 2_ON_D10 twice and keep the higher result.

  • Setback: A temporary harmful position. When a rule says you roll with a setback, roll the 2_ON_D10 twice and keep the lower result.

Hunter's Handbook

Horrors are not just beasts with teeth. Some are clever. Some are patient. Some can make a room full of good people agree to something unforgivable and thank them afterward. A few really are nothing more than hunger wearing a shape, but do not relax when you meet one of those. Hunger is honest, not harmless.

As you delve deeper into this book, you'll learn more about the specific roles and responsibilities of each of these entities, as well as the rules and systems that govern the game.
