Attributes
Step 1: Determine the Horror's Level
The first step in assigning attributes to a Horror is to determine its level. The level of a Horror should be based on the challenge you want it to pose to the Hunters.
Step 2: Identify the Horror's Core Attribute
Every Horror has a core attribute that defines its primary strength or focus. This could be the raw physical power of a Basal, the cunning intellect of an Alien, or any other attribute that best represents the Horror's nature.
Step 3: Assign the Core Attribute Value
Once you've identified the Horror's core attribute, consult the table below to determine its value based on the Horror's level:
Level | Core Attribute | Core Modifier |
---|---|---|
0 | 8 | -1 |
0.125 | 9 | -1 |
0.25 | 10 | 0 |
0.5 | 11 | 0 |
1 | 12 | 1 |
2 | 13 | 1 |
3 | 14 | 2 |
4 | 15 | 2 |
5 | 16 | 3 |
6 | 17 | 3 |
7 | 18 | 4 |
8 | 19 | 4 |
9 | 20 | 5 |
10 | 21 | 5 |
11 | 22 | 6 |
12 | 23 | 6 |
13 | 24 | 7 |
14 | 25 | 7 |
15 | 26 | 8 |
16 | 27 | 8 |
17 | 28 | 9 |
18 | 29 | 9 |
19 | 30 | 10 |
20 | 31 | 10 |
21 | 32 | 11 |
22 | 33 | 11 |
23 | 34 | 12 |
24 | 35 | 12 |
25 | 36 | 13 |
Step 4: Distribute the Remaining Attribute Points
After assigning the core attribute, you need to distribute the remaining attribute points. To do this:
- Rank the remaining attributes in order of importance to the Horror.
- Assign values to each attribute based on its rank using the following formulas:
- Priority 1: Core Attribute - 2
- Priority 2: Core Attribute - 3
- Priority 3: Core Attribute - 3
- Priority 4: Core Attribute - 4
- Priority 5: Core Attribute - 4
Example
Let's say you're creating a level 5 Alien Horror with Intellect as its core attribute. Here's how you would assign its attributes:
- Level: 5
- Core Attribute: Intellect
- Core Attribute Value: 16 (based on the table)
- Remaining Attributes (ranked by priority):
- Priority 1: Awareness (16 - 2 = 14)
- Priority 2: Charm (16 - 3 = 13)
- Priority 3: Dexterity (16 - 3 = 13)
- Priority 4: Strength (16 - 4 = 12)
- Priority 5: Durability (16 - 4 = 12)
So, the final attribute spread for this level 5 Alien Horror would be:
- Intellect: 16
- Awareness: 14
- Charm: 13
- Dexterity: 13
- Strength: 12
- Durability: 12
Remember, these formulas provide a starting point, but feel free to adjust the values to better suit your Horror concept or the needs of your story.
Overseer: "Hey Jason, I'm planning this encounter where the Hunters face off against a Spectral Horror. I was thinking of a ghost but that feels a bit cliché."
Jason: "Well, the best part about Obscured is that you can play around with the stereotypes. How about a ghost, but with a twist?"
Overseer: "Hmm, I like where this is going. What kind of twist are you suggesting?"
Jason: "How about a ghost that's... let's say, a disco-dancing superstar from the '70s? Spectral Horrors are known for their otherworldly charisma, right? Make that its core attribute!"
Overseer: Laughs "That's brilliant! Ethereal spinning disco balls and dazzling the Hunters with otherworldly dance moves!"
Jason: "Exactly! And remember, once you've set the core attribute, you can then distribute the rest based on what you think fits best. Maybe this ghost is not only charming but also agile and intelligent, making it a tricky opponent on the dance floor and in combat."
