Weapons

The weapon you wield can mean the difference between life and a gruesome end. From trusted sidearms to ancient artifacts, each weapon has unique strengths and drawbacks. In this section, we'll dive into the key characteristics of weapons and how they can affect your game.

Damage Types

Every weapon carries a specific damage type. When a Hunter attacks with a weapon, the damage inflicted matches the weapon's type. This is crucial when considering any resistances or weaknesses a foe may possess. For a comprehensive list of damage types, refer to the chapter on damage types.

Damage Dice and Attribute Modifiers

A weapon's damage output scales with the wielder's relevant attribute modifier. When a successful attack is made, the damage is calculated by rolling the weapon's damage dice a number of times equal to the wielder's attribute modifier. Here's how to calculate damage:

  1. Determine the relevant attribute modifier for the weapon.
  2. Roll the weapon's damage dice a number of times equal to the attribute modifier.

Example Calculations

Example 1: A Hunter with a Dexterity modifier of +3 fires a Dexterity-based pistol with a damage die of 1d4.

  • Dexterity Modifier: +3
  • Damage Roll: 3d4 (rolled results: 2, 4, 3)
  • Total Damage: 2 + 4 + 3 = 9

Example 2: A Hunter with a Strength modifier of +2 swings a Strength-based sword with a damage die of 1d8.

  • Strength Modifier: +2
  • Damage Roll: 2d8 (rolled results: 5, 7)
  • Total Damage: 5 + 7 = 12

Reloading & Capacity

Many weapons require ammunition. Reloading is a bonus action that a Hunter can perform on their turn, provided they have the necessary ammo. However, a Hunter cannot use a weapon in the same turn they reload it. They can still execute other actions or abilities that don't require their weapon. The weapon's capacity indicates the number of attacks it can make before needing a reload.

Ammo Price

The cost of ammo for a particular weapon can vary. As a general rule of thumb, the cost per reload can be calculated as 1% of the weapon's price.

Note

Hunters can recover reusable ammo types like arrows or certain throwables if they succeed on an Awareness check after the battle.

Range

The effective combat range of a weapon defines how far a Hunter can be from their target and still land an attack. This distance is usually less than the weapon's maximum theoretical range due to the constraints of a turn (representing a 10-second combat window) and the circumstances of the battle. Most melee weapons have a standard range of 5 feet.

Noise

The noise a weapon makes when used can range from nearly silent to earth-shattering. The impact of this noise is context-dependent and determined by the Overseer. Louder weapons might alert enemies, alarm locals, or provoke Horrors. Noise categories include:

  • Silent (SL): Near-silent weapons that can be used without alerting others.
  • Subtle (SB): Quiet weapons that may still alert those in the immediate vicinity.
  • Loud (L): Weapons that make a loud noise, potentially alerting a large area.
  • Deafening (D): Extremely loud weapons that can panic others in a vast area.
