Armor
Armor offers a valuable layer of protection, bolstering the wearer's Hit Threshold (HT) and, in some cases, providing resistance to specific types of damage. Understanding how different armor pieces interact can be crucial for maximizing your Hunter's survivability.
Resistance
Some armors have intrinsic resistance to specific damage types. If a Hunter is wearing armor resistant to the type of attack they're hit with, they will only take half the usual damage. This resistance applies regardless of other armor pieces worn.
HT Bonus ()
The primary function of armor is to raise a Hunter's HT, providing a buffer against incoming harm. When wearing multiple pieces of armor, only the highest HT bonus applies. For example, if a Hunter wears a vest with an HT bonus of +2 and a helmet with an HT bonus of +1, only the +2 bonus is considered.
Speed Penalty ()
Armor can hinder a Hunter's mobility due to weight or design, resulting in a speed penalty. All speed penalties from worn armor pieces are cumulative. If a Hunter wears two pieces of armor with speed penalties, both penalties apply. It's essential to weigh the protection offered against the reduction in mobility.
Interaction of Armor Pieces
- HT Bonus: Only the highest HT bonus from the armor pieces worn applies.
- Resistances: All resistances from the armor pieces worn apply.
- Speed Penalties: All speed penalties from the armor pieces worn apply.
Example
If a Hunter wears a Ballistic Suit (+10 HT, -5 ft. Speed, Resistance to Ballistic Damage) and a Breastplate (+8 HT, -5 ft. Speed, Resistance to Piercing Damage), the following applies:
- HT Bonus: +10 (from the Ballistic Suit)
- Resistance: Resistance to Ballistic Damage and Piercing Damage (from both pieces)
- Speed Penalty: -10 ft. (cumulative from both pieces)
This example also illustrates when an Overseer may want to use their discretion. A Hunter wearing both a Ballistic Suit and a Breastplate will be hampered by more than just the weight; the logistics of fitting both items can be ruled as impossible, or a more severe penalty can be imposed.
Choosing Armor
Choosing the right armor involves balancing the benefits of increased HT and resistances against the drawbacks of speed penalties. Consider the nature of the threats you expect to face and your Hunter's role and playstyle when selecting armor.
Comprehensive Armor List
The following sections contain a detailed list of available armor in Obscured, ranging from contemporary tactical gear to antique armor. Each piece is described with its HT bonus, resistances, and speed penalties, helping Hunters make informed decisions about their protective gear.
- Light Armor: Provides smaller HT bonuses but minimal speed penalties.
- Medium Armor: Offers a balance of protection and mobility.
- Heavy Armor: Grants significant HT bonuses and resistances but comes with substantial speed penalties.
Overseers should use their discretion when interpreting how multiple pieces of armor interact, especially when considering special functions or resistances that may not be explicitly covered in the rules.
