NPCs

Non-Playable Characters (NPCs) are the lifeblood that keeps the hidden world of Obscured vibrant and exciting. These characters, brought to life by the Overseer, provide depth and richness to the narrative, and they play a critical role in shaping the Hunters' journey. From a sassy barista (Amy knows a few) to the menacing villain plotting in the shadows, NPCs serve a multitude of purposes and add dynamism to the story.

NPCs may assist or oppose the Hunters in their adventures. They can provide crucial information, offer assistance, create challenges, or even serve as formidable adversaries. As such, an Overseer needs to track and manage significant NPCs' attributes and abilities, ensuring that they behave consistently and in line with their established character traits.

info

NPCs can provide an engaging roleplay experience, so don't underestimate their importance. Consider their individual motivations, personalities, and histories when interacting with them - your Overseer will appreciate the depth this adds to the game and I always have.

Example

Overseer: "Sunlight filters through the stained glass windows of the tavern, casting colorful patterns on the sawdust-covered floor. Behind the bar, a burly, red-faced man beams a wide smile. 'Well hello there! Welcome to the Rusty Nail. What can I get for ya?'"

David: Narrowing his eyes suspiciously. "This feels ... odd. Can I make an Awareness check to see if something's up?"

Overseer: "Sure, go for it."

David: "That's 18 plus 3. Do I notice anything?"

Overseer: "Ghost."

David: "I knew it!"

info

Remember, NPCs are more than just information kiosks or combat obstacles. They are active, living parts of the world, with their own motivations and roles in the story. They should react and evolve based on the actions of the Hunters, creating a dynamic and engaging narrative experience.
