Research

In a world obscured by cryptic creatures and hidden truths, knowledge becomes a vital tool for survival. Through research, Hunters can gain valuable insights into the Horrors they pursue, the locales they explore, or any other subject of interest.

Once per day, a group can dedicate an hour or more to researching a specific topic. The task of leading this intellectual endeavor falls upon a chosen Hunter, whose intellect will significantly influence the outcome. The more astute the lead Hunter, the more fruitful the research tends to be—the number of pieces of information, or "snippets," unearthed corresponds to the lead Hunter's intellect modifier.

Research can yield a diverse array of snippets, encompassing first-hand accounts, historical archives, rumors, speculation, and more. The Overseer presents these snippets, along with their sources, to the group. The team can also propose a specific method of research to potentially enhance the quality of their findings.

caution

Don't take everything you uncover at face value. The world of Obscured is steeped in folklore and hearsay. Misleading or biased information might be intentionally planted by cunning Horrors or well-meaning citizens desperate for any answer, even a wrong one. By exercising discernment and skepticism, your group can sift through the rumors and tales to uncover the truth, gaining a distinct edge over the lurking Horrors.

Research can unveil a treasure trove of crucial information about the Horrors you're hunting. Overseers should consider the following categories of information that Hunters might discover:

  • Weaknesses: Uncover vulnerabilities that could provide an advantage in a confrontation. Are they weak against certain types of damage or specific materials?
  • Traits: Learn about unique qualities or characteristics of the Horror. Can it fly, change shape, or command minions?
  • Exceptional Attributes: Discover if the Horror boasts superior abilities. Is it extraordinarily strong or cunning?
  • Lair Location: Determine where the Horror resides. Are they hiding in a haunted house, deep within the forest, or in the city sewers?
  • Behavior Patterns: Unravel the habits and routines of the Horror. Do they only hunt at night or prefer a particular type of victim?
  • History or Origin: Dig into the background or creation of the Horror. Are they an ancient entity, the result of a scientific experiment gone awry, or spawned from a curse?
Example

Overseer: "You spend the day at the local library digging through old newspaper articles and town records. You find an old article about a similar series of disappearances that happened around 50 years ago. The article mentions an old house on the outskirts of town where strange noises were often heard, and pets frequently went missing."

Amy: "Hmm, this could be the lair of our Horror. Let's go check it out tonight."

John: "Hey, isn't that the place I used to rent?"

David: "That does explain the reports of strange noises..."

info

Remember, the more specific the topic of research, the more targeted the information will be. Broad topics might yield more general knowledge, while focused research can reveal in-depth details. The key is to direct your research based on the needs of your hunt. The world of Obscured is vast and full of secrets; it's up to you to unveil them.
