Down Time
In the world of Obscured, the life of a Hunter is punctuated by periods of intense activity and much-needed rest. These quieter moments, known as downtime, provide a chance for Hunters to catch their breath, lick their wounds, and prepare for the next challenge. Downtime can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on the needs of the story and the characters.
During downtime, each Hunter can choose to focus on one of three main activities: relaxing, recovery, or training. The benefits gained from these activities will last until the start of the next downtime period.
Relaxing
Hunting Horrors is a mentally and physically exhausting job. Taking time to unwind and indulge in personal hobbies can help Hunters maintain their sanity and perspective. Whether it's losing themselves in a good book, enjoying a friendly game of cards, or simply catching up on some much-needed sleep, relaxation is key to a Hunter's well-being. A Hunter who chooses to relax gains advantage on one check using their core skill in the next adventure.
Recovery
Battles leave scars, both physical and mental. Downtime allows Hunters to tend to their wounds and process the trauma they've experienced. Recovering from physical injuries requires access to medical care, while mental recovery might involve therapy or other coping methods. The exact details of the recovery process are left to the Overseer and player to determine based on the needs of the story. Hunter's who spend their downtime on recovery will remove their fatigue and one lasting effect.
Training
For Hunters who prefer to stay sharp, downtime provides an opportunity to hone their skills and abilities. This could involve practicing combat techniques, delving into ancient tomes to research Horrors, or working on a particular skill. As long as the Hunter has access to the necessary resources and facilities, they can dedicate themselves to training. A Hunter who trains diligently gains advantage on one attack roll with a specific weapon or ability in the next adventure.
Any Hunter worth their salt knows that downtime and preparation is just as important as getting into the thick of it with a Horror. I've seen too many promising young Hunters push themselves too far without taking the time to recover. Take it from me, you need the downtime.
Amy: "Ugh, that last fight really did a number on me. I think I'll spend this downtime recovering. Maybe I can finally convince Dr. Peterson that I'm not crazy, just... experienced."
David: (smirking) "Good luck with that. Peterson's about as open-minded as a rusted bear trap. While you're working on him, I'll be reading through that old occult text we found in the mansion. Let's call it leisure reading."
Overseer: "Alright, Amy, you start the next session back in fighting form. David, you'll have advantage on a check using your core skill when you guys start tracking down that seamonster. Use it wisely."
Downtime is a vital part of the Obscured experience. It allows characters to grow, relationships to develop, and new plot threads to emerge. As an Overseer, use downtime to enrich your story and give your players a chance to explore their Hunters' lives beyond the battlefield. With a little creativity and a dash of roleplaying, downtime can be just as engaging as the most intense Horror encounter.
