Damage Types
In a world filled with lurking Horrors, every advantage matters. Understanding damage types is crucial because some Hunters, Horrors, or pieces of armor may resist or be vulnerable to certain types of damage.
Resistance to a damage type reduces the total incoming damage by half. On the other hand, vulnerability to a damage type means the affected party takes twice as much damage when hit with that type.
Here are the various damage types in Obscured:
Damage Type | Description | Example |
---|---|---|
Ballistic | Damage from bullets and similar high-velocity projectiles | A Hunter getting shot by a gun wielded by a local police officer |
Blast | Damage from explosions, often affecting a wide area | A Horror caught in the epicenter of a Hunter's grenade |
Cold | Damage from extremely low temperatures, often slowing or freezing targets | A Hunter trapped in a supernatural blizzard conjured by a Horror |
Corruption | Damage from malevolent, reality-warping energies that can twist body and mind | A Horror's touch that leaves a Hunter's skin withered and mind reeling |
Electric | Damage from electrical currents, often stunning or paralyzing targets | A Hunter struck by a Horror's lightning blast |
Energy | Damage from concentrated, often plasma-like energies that can melt through almost anything | A Horror's energy beam searing through a Hunter's armor |
Fire | Damage from flames and extreme heat, often leaving targets burning | A Hunter engulfed in a Horror's infernal breath |
Impact | Damage from blunt force trauma, often knocking targets back or off their feet | A Horror slamming a Hunter into a wall with brutal strength |
Mental | Damage that targets the mind, often causing confusion, fear, or insanity | A Hunter's mind assaulted by the psychic screams of a Horror |
Piercing | Damage from puncturing attacks that can bypass armor and strike vital organs | A Horror's razor-sharp claw finding a gap in a Hunter's armor |
Radiation | Damage from harmful radiation that can sicken and weaken targets over time | A Hunter exposed to the toxic glow emanating from a Horror's form |
Slashing | Damage from slicing and cutting attacks that can cause heavy bleeding | A Hunter cut by the blade-like appendages of a Horror |
Sonic | Damage from intense sound waves that can shatter objects and rupture internal organs | A Hunter caught in the path of a Horror's deafening roar |
Toxic | Damage from poisonous substances that can corrode flesh or cause lethal ailments | A Hunter inhaling the noxious fumes spewed forth by a Horror |
Overseer: "As you delve deeper into the icy cavern, a grotesque creature with razor-sharp teeth slithers from the shadows. A foul-smelling venom drips from its fangs."
John: "I have a suit that resists cold damage. Does it help against poison?"
Overseer: "Sadly, no. Your cold resistance won't protect you from the creature's toxic bite. You'll have to think of another way to avoid its deadly venom."
Remember, these damage types add another layer of strategy to the game, allowing Hunters to exploit their adversaries' weaknesses or protect themselves against specific threats. But be warned, the Horrors you face will also seek to use your vulnerabilities against you. In the unforgiving world of Obscured, knowledge and tactics are just as important as raw strength and firepower.
