Actions
In the heart of combat, choices echo louder than gunfire. Every action – from a desperate attack to a whispered plea to a forgotten god – has the potential to turn the tide, or lead to your downfall. During the heat of combat in Obscured, Hunters can perform a variety of actions to turn the tide in their favor. While they can make numerous free actions, they're limited to one major action per turn. Here are the different types of actions a Hunter can take:
Attack
When the chips are down and it's time to fight, a Hunter can use a weapon or an ability to launch an attack. But remember, to make an attack, a Hunter must have a weapon ready or an ability with available charges.
To attack, the Hunter makes a roll and adds their attack modifier (AM). If the total equals or exceeds their opponent's hit threshold (HT), it's a hit, and they roll for damage.
Ability
Not all abilities are used for direct attacks. Some need checks, while others can be triggered freely. When using an ability that requires a check, the opponent must roll against the ability's difficulty threshold to dodge or mitigate its effects.
Interaction (free)
In the chaos of combat, it's the little things that count. Quick communication, grabbing a weapon, flicking a switch – these simple actions, or interactions, can be done freely.
Check
When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Complex tasks like leaping over a pit, pushing an opponent, or picking a lock under pressure will require a successful check. The Overseer will assign an appropriate check and difficulty threshold for the task.
Sneak
Need to play it safe? A Hunter can try to blend into their surroundings and hide. But remember, to sneak successfully, a Hunter must pass a sneak check and avoid direct visibility.
Sprint
When all else fails, run! Hunters can use their action to sprint, effectively doubling their speed for the turn. This can be used for covering more ground or making quick getaways.
Overseer: "Alright, David. You're face-to-face with the horror, its eyes glowing like spectral flames. Your move."
David: "I want to use my Accursed Name of Fire ability. It requires a check, right?"
Overseer: "Correct, David. This grotesque creature must roll against your CT." rolls dice "...and they fail. Describe your attack."
David: "The Accursed Name burns on my tongue. As I speak the syllable, shadows flicker and a blast of crimson energy hits the horror square in the chest!"
Amy: laughs "And here I thought you were going to try and talk your way out of this one."
David: "There's a time and place for diplomacy, Amy. This isn't it."
Remember, every action echoes. A successful attack can turn the tide of the fight... but a failure could seal your doom.
